10月28日 InvictusHollywood, Apartheid and Rugby Union – it really shouldn’t work. But check out the spine-tingling trailer for Invictus, Clint Eastwood’s Oscar shoo-in, out later this year.
10月16日 The Death of Bunny Munro
10月7日 Beck’s Record ClubThe concept is simple. Beck gets a bunch of his music mates around and reinterprets a classic album over the course of a day. Then he gets long-time collaborator Nigel Godrich round to tart it up and posts it on his site, along with some suitably low-fi videos. Leonard Cohen and The Velvet Underground have got the treatment so far. The High LineOne of the highlights (quite literally) of our recent trip to New York was our pre-dinner Saturday evening stroll along the High Line, the former railway line which has been transformed in to a stunning above-street garden. Fab views of the city and the river and generating a real buzz in this already great part of town. 9月3日 Vincent Valdez and burning L.AArtist Vincent Valdez is opening a new exhibition of his work in Los Angeles this weekend. With impeccable timing, Burn, will feature cityscapes showing the City and its people in “a process of destruction and regeneration”, with many of the paintings depicting local landmarks engulfed in flames. 8月26日 Splitting the Atom
8月21日 Kind of BlueI know this is a total indulgence, but Kind of Blue, the album that pretty-much shaped modern music, was 50 years old this week – a pretty good excuse to post this video of a simply fabulous version of So What. Brilliant.
8月20日 Edwyn Collins
But the real celebration will be for the remarkable and brave progress he is making from the two serious strokes and subsequent MRSA he suffered in 2005. There’s some great footage on the BBC Radio 4 site showing him rehearsing for the Edinburgh show and an interview with Edwyn and his wife, Grace, where they talk candidly about his illness and recovery. 8月17日 Medeski, Martin & WoodThis is at least ten years old, but I only stumbled upon it at the weekend. MMW have long-been one of my favourite bands – they are all shit-hot musicians and this collaboration with John Scofield is amazing. But just look at their faces. This is some seriously extreme jazz-gurning. You could watch this with the sound turned down and still know what they were playing. Great stuff. 8月13日 David Byrne – Playing the BuildingReally looking forward to having a go at this. David Byrne is a genuine genius and his Playing the Building project is just another example of his restless creativity. Escalator AnimationThis is brilliant. A really simple idea, beautifully executed. What a bloody mess at Harlequins? This little bit of footage will make some pretty uncomfortable viewing for everyone involved with Harlequins. I love Barnsey’s comment – “the only person who has punched Tom Williams, is Tom Williams” – how prophetic? Richards has gone, Williams is suspended, club about to be thrown out of the European cup – and the season doesn’t start for another couple of weeks. 8月12日 Domestic Decals
Not sure I'd want them in my dining room, but some of these huge decals by French firm, Domestic, are extremely cool and a great, and cheap, alternative to wallpaper The Imaginarium of Doctor ParnassusTom Waits looks brilliantly cast as the devil in Terry Gilliam’s fabulous-looking new movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. 8月10日 Trek District7月17日 Wilco (the album)So if you don’t own it already, do believe the hype. Here’s my favourite track – Tweedy’s best in years. Are they real Nudies, they're wearing? 7月14日 Kristian House
7月3日 Mavis Staples and the Iran situationSomeone knows their protest music. Great mash-up of Mavis Staples’ stunning We Shall Not Be Moved with images of the unrest in Iran. 6月19日 Dark Night of the Soul
N.A.S.AHere is N.A.S.A’s brilliantly inventive video for “A Volta”. It’s closer to a mini animated short than a pop video. Violence, swearing, and a drug-taking mouse. |
